While children go from grade school age to their preteens, there are many changes that take place, typical development for 6-12 year olds is both physical and behavioral. Children grow taller at a rate of about two and a half inches each year.

They will also gain weight at a faster pace when the reach the age of 8 years old. At age 8, children will usually start thinking about how they look to other people. For girls, it is very common to be over concerned about their weight. However, boys are often sensitive about their height. Teach your children to realize that being healthy is much more important than the way they look. Your son has no control over how tall he will eventually grow. It is mostly based on genes that control height.

Encourage him to eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise. You should take your child to regular checkups with the doctor. The doctor will always measure the child’s height. It is suggested to keep a record of this growth and compare it to other children. Also the doctor is well aware of typical development for 6-12 year olds.

Normal growth comes from many different factors; regular exercise, enough sleep and nutritional foods. These are the best ways to ensure your child remains in good health. As stated before, remember that your child’s physical and behavioral pattern is mostly dictated by genes. More food, vitamins or any other nutrients will not make any difference in the height of your child.

To help your child to experience self esteem, you should accept them just as they are. Puberty, also known as sexual maturing, can be very hard for both girls and boys. Puberty usually begins sometime around the age of 11 or 12, but it can vary with each child. For girls and boys, there are changes in hormones, causing different behavior. Also, puberty is a time for development of their bodies as they mature into young adults.
