An important element in treating diabetes is to follow diabetic meal plans. Due to the nature of the disease, the food a diabetic can eat is restricted. One should choose water or at least the “diet” labeled drinks, which have no or little caloric and sugar content. Salt should also be used sparingly in one’s meals and alcoholic drinks avoided or drank in moderation.

For diabetics, it’s not just simply what one eats but the timing of one’s meals is also crucial to keep glucose levels at a constant. It is advisable that instead of eating heavy meals, diabetic diet meal plans are designed to have small meals and snacks are spaced evenly throughout the day. Diabetic meal plans should also incorporate insulin intake of the diabetic patient in terms of how long before or after a meal should one inject insulin, the type of insulin, and the dosage. There are also other diabetes management alternatives that one can try out but should be discussed first with one’s doctor. First are food supplements like cinnamon, garlic, flaxseed, chromium picolinate, zinc, salacia oblonga, and vanadium. Artificial sweeteners are also in the market like sucralose, saccharin and aspartame. Of course, one should do the proper research and consultation regarding possible side effects especially when taken together with one’s regular diabetes medication. Finally, a balanced diet should be complemented by regular exercise. Some studies have shown that Eastern therapy like Tai Chi and Qi Gong are good exercises for diabetics.
